A new technique in the excavation of ground-nest bee burrows (Hymenoptera: Apoidea) Rev. Bras. entomol.
Marinho,Diego; Andrade,Juliana; Araujo,Rodrigo O.; Vivallo,Felipe.
ABSTRACT Bees have a diversified natural history, thus the methods applied to study such diversity are varied. When it comes to studies of nesting biology, bees which nest in pre-existing cavities have been reasonably well studied since researchers started using trap-nests. However, bees whose nests are built underground are poorly studied due to the difficulty of finding natural nesting areas and the absence of a method that facilitates bee nest excavation. The latter is evidenced by the lack of accurate descriptions in literature of how nests are excavated. In this study we tested cylindrical rubber refills of eraser pen as a new material to be used as a tracer of underground nest galleries in a natural nesting area of two species of Epicharis Klug, 1807...

A new tracking algorithm for sea ice age distribution estimation ArchiMer
Korosov, Anton; Rampal, Pierre; Pedersen, Leif Toudal; Saldo, Roberto; Ye, Yufang; Heygster, Georg; Lavergne, Thomas; Aaboe, Signe; Girard Ardhuin, Fanny.
A new algorithm for estimating sea ice age (SIA) distribution based on the Eulerian advection scheme is presented. The advection scheme accounts for the observed divergence or convergence and freezing or melting of sea ice and predicts consequent generation or loss of new ice. The algorithm uses daily gridded sea ice drift and sea ice concentration products from the Ocean and Sea Ice Satellite Application Facility. The major advantage of the new algorithm is the ability to generate individual ice age fractions in each pixel of the output product or, in other words, to provide a frequency distribution of the ice age allowing to apply mean, median, weighted average or other statistical measures. Comparison with the National Snow and Ice Data Center SIA...

A note on the chestnut vine and Séraphin Mottet’s ‘Dictionnaire Pratique d’Horticulture et Jardinage’ (1892–1899) Naturalis
Mabberley, D.J..
The discovery, introduction and naming of the chestnut vine (Tetrastigma voinierianum, Vitaceae), a Vietnamese plant, is examined and bibliographic citation corrected. The 173 at the time of writing disregarded new species names and new combinations made in Séraphin Mottet’s Dictionnaire Pratique d’Horticulture et Jardinage (1892–1899) include six names in current use, hitherto attributed to later authors. All the other Mottet novelties, as well as the 125 disregarded in Nicholson’s ‘mother volume’, his Illustrated Dictionary of Gardening (four names in current use) and its later Century Supplement (22) have been passed to IPNI editors as have 15 from Bois’s Dictionnaire d’Horticulture Illustré: none disturbs current nomenclature save six changes in...

A NOVEL GREEN BIOREFINERY CONCEPT: Protein refining by lactic acid fermentation and biogas production from green biomass Organic Eprints
Fernandez, Maria Santamaria.
The extraction of proteins from leaves, integrated in a green biorefinery, may represent an attractive solution to the increasing demand for protein-rich animal feeds while decreasing the dependency on soybean imports. Thereby such green biorefineries could contribute to the development of more self-sufficient and sustainable agricultural systems in Europe. The framework of this PhD study is a green biorefinery concept for the production of protein concentrate, biogas and fertilizer from organic and locally grown green crops like alfalfa, clover or grass. After the screw pressing of the fresh crops, lactic acid fermentation of the green juice with Lactobacillus salivarius BC 1001 was assessed as the key method for the recovery of proteins. A leaf protein...

A novel probabilistic forecast system predicting anomalously warm 2018-2022 reinforcing the long-term global warming trend ArchiMer
Sevellec, Florian; Drijfhout, Sybren S..
In a changing climate, there is an ever-increasing societal demand for accurate and reliable interannual predictions. Accurate and reliable interannual predictions of global temperatures are key for determining the regional climate change impacts that scale with global temperature, such as precipitation extremes, severe droughts, or intense hurricane activity, for instance. However, the chaotic nature of the climate system limits prediction accuracy on such timescales. Here we develop a novel method to predict global-mean surface air temperature and sea surface temperature, based on transfer operators, which allows, by-design, probabilistic forecasts. The prediction accuracy is equivalent to operational forecasts and its reliability is high. The post-1998...

A Novel Raw Starch Hydrolyzing Thermostable α-Amylase Produced by Newly Isolated Bacillus mojavensis SO-10: Purification, Characterization and Usage in Starch Industries BABT
Ozdemir,Sadin; Fincan,Sema Aguloglu; Karakaya,Adem; Enez,Baris.
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is the production, purification, and characterisation of thermostable raw starch hydrolyzing α-amylase produced by Bacillus mojavensis SO-10. The maximum production conditions of α-amylase were found at 36th hour, 35 °C and pH 7.0. We utilized three steps to purify the thermostable α-amylase and as a result, 34-fold and 18% yield were obtained. The molecular weight of purified α-amylase was determined as 73 kD. The Km and Vmax rates were detected as 0.010 mM and 3.38 µmol min−1, respectively. This purified α-amylase exhibited the highest activity at pH 5.0-6.0 and 70 ºC and showed stability over a wide variety of pH and temperature at 4.0-8.0, and 40-50 ºC, respectively. The thermostable purified α-amylase exhibited stability...

A numerical modeling study of the Southern Senegal upwelling shelf: Circulation and upwelling source waters ArchiMer
Ndoye, S; Capet, Xavier; Estrade, Philippe; Machu, Eric; Kounta, L; Sow, B; Diakhate, M; Gayet, At.
The regional ocean circulation along the Southern Senegal shelf is studied using a numerical model for varying forcing fields during the upwelling season (November-May). The main objective is to study the shelf circulation of the marine environment in the Southern Senegal Upwelling Shelf (SSUS), the Lagrangian pathways by which waters are transported to the surface in the upwelling tongue and the fate of these waters. Model results are compared with hydrographic measurements during UPSEN2-ECOAO survey and satellite images datasets. The upwelling source waters and also the warm nearshore waters are analyzed, from a Lagrangian point of view, by computing the paths of particles that are passively advected by the regional ocean model velocity field (ROMS). It...

A numerical study of tropical cyclone-induced sediment dynamics on the Australian North West Shelf ArchiMer
Dufois, Francois; Lowe, Ryan J.; Rayson, Matthew D.; Branson, Paul M..
Owing to their strong forcing of the ocean surface, tropical cyclones strongly modify the hydrodynamics of Australia's North West Shelf (one of the world's tropical cyclone hotspots), which in turn plays a dominant role in its sediment dynamics. Previous modeling studies have focused on describing the short term sediment dynamics during individual tropical cyclones, but have lacked validation of the responses using field observations. As a consequence, the long term cumulative impact of the tropical cyclones on the residual sediment transport pathways at the shelf scale remains unclear. In this study we apply a sediment transport model over the North West Shelf, validate its performance using an extensive field dataset, and implement a 14 year‐long model...

A Pan-Amazonian species delimitation: high species diversity within the genus Amazophrynella (Anura: Bufonidae) ArchiMer
Rojas, Rommel R.; Fouquet, Antoine; Ron, Santiago R.; Hernandez-ruz, Emil Jose; Melo-sampaio, Paulo R.; Chaparro, Juan C.; Vogt, Richard C.; De Carvalho, Vinicius Tadeu; Pinheiro, Leandra Cardoso; Avila, Robson W.; Farias, Izeni Pires; Gordo, Marcelo; Hrbek, Tomas.
Amphibians are probably the most vulnerable group to climate change and climate-change associate diseases. This ongoing biodiversity crisis makes it thus imperative to improve the taxonomy of anurans in biodiverse but understudied areas such as Amazonia. In this study, we applied robust integrative taxonomic methods combining genetic (mitochondrial 16S, 12S and COI genes), morphological and environmental data to delimit species of the genus Amazophrynella (Anura: Bufonidae) sampled from throughout their pan-Amazonian distribution. Our study confirms the hypothesis that the species diversity of the genus is grossly underestimated. Our analyses suggest the existence of eighteen linages of which seven are nominal species, three Deep Conspecific Lineages, one...

A pH-responsive drug delivery matrix from an interpolyelectrolyte complex: preparation and pharmacotechnical properties BJPS
Montaña,Jorge Andrés; Perez,León Darío; Baena,Yolima.
ABSTRACT Interpolyelectrolyte complexes, which constitute a type of polymeric material obtained through the self-assembly of oppositely charged polymers, exhibit interesting properties for use in the design of smart matrices for drug delivery. In the present study, a stoichiometric interpolyelectrolyte complex (SIPEC) composed of Eudragit E® and Eudragit® L100 was obtained at pH 6.0 and characterized and evaluated as a hydrophilic matrix for dexibuprofen. The formation of a SIPEC was monitored by ζ-potential measurements and characterized using infrared spectroscopy, thermal analysis, and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicated that a SIPEC obtained under these conditions can be used as a matrix for controlling the release of dexibuprofen and...
